Understanding the Experiences of LGBTQ Students

Developed by the WestEd Justice & Prevention Research Center, this brief presents a definition of school-based law enforcement and summarizes some of the relevant research about its effects on students and schools. The authors found little rigorous evaluative research on the effects of having a police presence in schools.

Nearly 30 percent of Black students say it is “not at all true” that the presence of police on their school campuses makes them feel safe, based on survey data from eight diverse school districts in California alone. About 15 percent of Latino and White students said they felt that way, along with 9 percent of Asian American students.

Equitable evaluation addresses the dynamics and practices that, historically, have undervalued the voices, knowledge, expertise, capacity, and experiences of all evaluation participants and stakeholders, particularly people of color and individuals and groups who have been marginalized.

REL West works to build the capacity of states and districts to better understand evidence standards in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and apply them to decisions pertaining to policy and practice.
