Building Leadership to Improve Math Teaching and Learning

This recent REL West webinar looks at the research about social and emotional needs and conditions for success. Representatives from RISE Colorado, Douglas County School District, and the Pritchard Community Student Voice Team share perspectives on how educators can best support the social and emotional needs of students, staff, and families. The webinar concludes with action-planning tips and strategies.

Nineteen of the nation’s 35 accredited tribal colleges and universities are improving student outcomes through Carnegie Math Pathways, a program focused on solving the nation’s math-barrier crisis in order to increase college graduation rates. Tribal students’ math success in Pathways courses averages 25 percent higher than in their original courses. This is especially gratifying for faculty who see their teaching in larger terms — as educating future tribal leaders.

New WestEd resources support educators and leaders with advancing science this fall.

Science Learning During COVID-19. According to recent WestEd research, 88% of teachers said students spent less time on science during distance learning. In this June webinar, WestEd researchers report initial research findings and share challenges and success stories from science educators.

Keep Teaching Science. A new NextGenScience resource explores how materials aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards can be adapted for virtual or at-home settings. Join us on 9/17 to learn about the strategies to adapt science materials, learn about process and design decisions, and discuss leadership strategies to support educators.

Developed for education leaders and policymakers, this new brief summarizes survey data that show what California teachers think about their school’s or district’s instructional materials in relation to students who are English learners. One key finding: Compared to their mathematics and science colleagues, English language arts teachers more frequently modify or supplement materials to make them more culturally relevant and appropriate for English learner students.

With high school graduation rates up and dropout rates down over the past decade, educators are concerned that distance learning could impact this progress.
