Work-based learning (WBL) at scale requires a shift from the traditional “education or work” to a more integrated “education and work” model. Learn how the San Diego & Imperial Counties Regional Consortium provided WBL opportunities to nearly 10,500 students in 1 year.

Young people are curious about almost everything. In his work, Thomas Torre Gibney, WestEd Senior Research Associate, has found that it’s never too early to help students explore their career interests. Starting in middle school can make a big difference.

When education doesn’t align with labor market needs, students can have a tough time navigating the transitions between high school, college, and the workforce. But if education systems and industries work together to support students, these transitions can be smoother.

The number of data-focused occupations is growing faster than the average growth rate of all occupations. Equipping students with tools and knowledge to make sense of data is important for helping them leverage those skills and interests to gain a well-paying career.

Educators who receive student teaching opportunities in their preparation programs are more effective and stay in the profession longer than those who participate in "fast-track" alternatives. But these programs can be cost-prohibitive. Innovative funding models are needed to ensure that high-quality teacher preparation is more affordable.
